Communication and Information


UNESCO aims to promote the free flow of ideas and universal access to information and knowledge, promote the expression of pluralism and cultural diversity in the media and promote access for all to information and communication technologies, especially in the public domain.

Freedom of Expression
UNESCO promotes freedom of expression and freedom of the press as a basic human right, through sensitization and monitoring activities and fosters media independence and pluralism as prerequisites and major factors of democratization by providing advisory services on media legislation and sensitizing governments, parliamentarians and other decision-makers.

Information and Communication Development
UNESCO promotes free and pluralistic media in developing countries and the countries in transition.

Media Development
UNESCO helps to stenghten the capacities of communication institutions, to improve the training of media professionals and to raise awareness among the public in making best use of communication resources.

Archives
Documentary heritage reflects the diversity of languages, peoples and cultures. It is the mirror of the world and its memory. But this memory is fragile. Every day, irreplaceable parts of this memory disappear for ever. UNESCO is working towards the preservation of the valuable archive holdings and library collections all over the world ensuring their wide dissemination.

22 Jul 2007 UNESCO Supports Caribbean Digital Libraries and Digital Repositories Workshop NALIS/UNESCO
The National Library and Information System of Trinidad and Tobago (NALIS) in collaboration with The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization conducted the workshop; Caribbean Digital Libraries and Digital Repositories: Recent Initiatives and Future Development. The workshop was held at the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain from July10-13, 2007. It was designed to raise the levels of awareness within relevant institutions associated with the digitization of libraries and archives. More

UNESCO and the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) supported the development of a new educational tool called Easy Skanking . This educational software was specially designed for Jamaica and the West Indies and includes a brand new interactive literacy course targeting young Jamaican adolescents and adults, between the ages of 14 to 35. The project started in late 2004 with follow-up support in 2006. An Internet version was released in January 2007. More
