Jamaica joined UNESCO on November 7, 1962. The capital city, Kingston, is also the headquarters of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Caribbean.

The UNESCO Office in Kingston is seeking to develop access to Information for All through various media outlets. It has launched a community multimedia centre (CMC), in association with the local radio station Roots FM. UNESCO’s support to the media contributes to more effective HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns as well as to improving education.

A regional Workshop on Digitalization of Cultural Heritage in the Caribbean, co-organized by UNESCO, was held in Kingston in 2005. Its goal was to enhance the capacity of specialists from the region to deal with digital preservation and documentation of cultural heritage. Jamaica is among the most active countries in the region in culture. The first events organized in the Caribbean, around the Slave Route Project, originated in Jamaica.

In the field of intangible heritage, the Moore Town Maroons heritage was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003.

Jamaica is participating in two UNESCO natural sciences sector projects that promote management of coastal areas for sustainable living, as well as initiatives focusing on issues relevant to small island states, such as climate change.
