Planet Earth: From Space to Place

    Inauguration of the Exhibition “Planet Earth: From Space to Place” will take place on 16 October 2007, at 6:00 p.m., in Hall Ségur.

    This intersectoral, interdisciplinary exhibition comes ahead of the celebration of the International Year of Planet Earth in 2008 and will continue throughout the General Conference. It features the work of the Organization relating to sustainable development and climate change.

    “Planet Earth: From Space to Place” aims to celebrate the diversity and complexity of our planet, to explore the challenges facing it, in particular climate change, and to showcase UNESCO’s contribution to its sustainable development. The themes presented are “The Earth System; “The Dynamic Earth”; “The Diverse Earth”; “The Changing Earth” and “Sustaining the Earth”.

    The exhibition will be inaugurated by the Director-General in the presence of His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden.

    GC - EVENTS Director-General's opening cocktail for the 34th General Conference
    GC - EVENTS Panel Discussion on "Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples: impacts and responses"
    The session, organised by UNESCO's Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) Programme with assistance from the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the support of the Canadian National Commission, will highlight how indigenous knowledge and observations may contribute to understanding, monitoring and adapting to climate change.
    GC - EVENTS Presentation on "The concept of terroir: a model of site-specific sustainable development?"
    This event will be followed by a tasting session of products from different ‘terroirs’ including from UNESCO sites.
    GC - EVENTS Introduction to the celebration of the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) 2008
    The Year runs from January 2007 to December 2009. The central year (2008) was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the UN Year.
