    © UNESCO    		 The Sacred City of Caral-Supe (Peru), the oldest centre of civilization in the Americas, was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee, chaired by María Jesús San Segundo, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Spain to UNESCO. The Committee also added the historic centre of the town of Levoča to the Slovak World Heritage site of Spišský Hrad inscribed on the List in 1993.     © UNESCO    		 The World Heritage Committee, chaired by María Jesús San Segundo, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Spain to UNESCO, has inscribed the Wadden Sea on the World Heritage List as a transboundary property for Germany and the Netherlands.
    The Committee also inscribed Italy’s Dolomites mountains and the Philippines’ Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park as an extension to the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1993, representing a threefold increase in the size of the original property, located in the Province of Palawan. Video: The Dolomites

    • Aksum obelisk returns to Ethiopia

    		 In June 2008, the first of the 3 blocks of the Aksum Obelisk was raised and placed on a reinforced concrete foundation. This stele weighs 152 tons and is 23.4 meters long.
    In April 2005 aboard an Antonov, blocks travelled from Rome to Ethiopia, their original site. The implementation of two other blocks should end in July 2008. The total budget of this project put in place by the UNESCO and completely financed by the Italian Government, comes to the price of 4.78 million dollars. Watch the footage

She is nominated in recognition of her “exceptional commitment to arts education and her contribution to furthering the Organization’s ideals.” She is the first Portuguese woman to become a UNESCO artist for peace. Watch the footage

    • Global disaster reduction education campaign to be launched at UNESCO

    		 A global campaign for disaster reduction education will be launched on 15 June at UNESCO (6 p.m., Room II), by the Inter-Agency Secretariat of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), UNESCO and the French National Committee for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. The campaign, entitled “Disaster Risk Reduction Begins at School", has two main objectives: promote disaster reduction education in school curricula, and improve school safety by encouraging the application of construction standards that can withstand any kind of natural hazard. Watch the video
