Ptolemy I founded the legendary Library of Alexandria over 2000 years ago, the largest of its kind in the Middle East and Africa. Over the centuries, it has been destroyed several times over, and then reconstructed. At the Egyptian government’s request in 1986, UNESCO helped give an international dimension to the scheme for the revival of the ancient library. An international appeal was launched the following year and the project was successfully completed in 2002.
