05-11-2008 3:25 am HRH Princess Firyal of Jordan, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, participated in the United Nations Roundtable on education and health on 25 September 2008 in New York on the occasion of the High Level Summit on the Millennium Development Goals. This High Level Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which was convened by the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon and the President of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Miguel d’Escoto Brockmannm enabled international leaders to examine the progress achieved, identify challenges ahead, and commit themselves to taking the necessary practical steps to achieve the MDGs by 2015.
The Roundtable on education and health was an important element of the Summit. UNESCO Director-General, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, and Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr Margaret Chan served as co-rapporteurs. HRH Princess Firyal of Jordan, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in charge of Education for All, delivered a keynote speech and highlighted the worldwide progress towards universal access to basic education, especially for girls. She also urged the need to continue efforts in this direction, while stressing the intricate connection between education and health, as well as the importance of the holistic approach to education advocated by UNESCO, in particular the emphasis on Early Childhood Care and Education and Literacy.
