Los terremotos sobre el suelo oceánico, las erupciones volcánicas, los desprendimientos de tierras submarinos y hasta los impactos de meteoritos pueden desencadenar inmensas olas, mejor conocidas como tsunamis. Apenas perceptibles en las profundidades del océano, los tsunamis se desplazan a la velocidad de un avión a reacción pero cuando golpean las aguas menos profundas se ralentizan hasta desembocar en las costas.
