El filósofo alemán Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) ha contribuido inmensamente al pensamiento moderno. En su ensayo “Paz perpetua” (1795) defendió el establecimiento de una federación mundial de Estados republicanos (cercana al concepto actual de Naciones Unidas). En filosofía se ocupó de la metafísica a la epistemología, pasando por la ética y la estética. Además de sus trabajos filosóficos, Kant escribió numerosos tratados sobre temas científicos.
