Mahmud Sami al Barudi (1839-1904), poeta y político, fue una figura influyente de la literatura egipcia. Su obra Diwan constituye una de las manifestaciones más destacadas del renacimiento poético árabe. Sus obras completas, publicadas parcialmente en 1909 y en su totalidad en 1940, marcan la transición del clasicismo a la poesía moderna. La pureza de su lenguaje ha influido con toda seguridad en la poesía árabe moderna.
