Stefan cel Mare (Esteban el Grande) (1434-1504), quien accedió al trono de Moldavia en 1457, impulsó un considerable desarrollo cultural en el país a lo largo de sus cincuenta años de reino, que fue un periodo de grandes construcciones eclesiásticas y donaciones. Las iglesias del Norte de Moldavia (región de Rumania) se inscribieron en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial en 1993.
