Botswana joined UNESCO on 16 January 1980. The country is covered by the Harare Cluster Office in Zimbabwe.

Since 2001, the country has a UNESCO Chair in Open and Distance Learning and a UNEVOC centre for technical and professional training. A Centre for Culture and Peace Studies was launched at the University of Botswana in April 2007.

Botswana has actively participated in the programme of Sustainable Integrated Management and Development of Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Southern Africa (SIMDAS).

UNESCO also assists the country in the fight against HIV/AIDS. A project on Enhancing the Development of Leadership Skills in the Management of HIV and AIDS in Secondary Schools is currently undergoing in Botswana. It is part of the national policy introduced in response to the pandemic.

Botswanas’s Tsodilo World Heritage site, with more than 4,500 rock paintings, is sometimes called “the Louvre of the desert”.
