The principality of Monaco joined UNESCO on 6 July 1949.

Since December 2003, HRH the Princess of Hanover has contributed to UNESCO’s programmes as a Goodwill Ambassador for the education of girls and women, reinforcing Monaco’s close ties with the Organization.

At the instigation of the Princess of Hanover and San Marino, Andorra, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Monaco and San Marino signed an agreement with UNESCO to create joint funds to finance two innovative projects in Niger, supporting literacy for women and children and developing income-generating activities.

HRH Prince Albert II met Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar during his official visit to Mongolia in August 2008. An agreement was signed between the two countries for cultural cooperation. The Monaco-Mongolia scientific mission, under the aegis of UNESCO and the patronage of Prince Albert II, is studying the late Bronze Age site of Tsatsiin Ereg and the Buddhist monastery of Tsetserleg.

Exploring the theme of preserving intangible heritage in industrialized countries, Andorra, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Monaco and San Marino organized a roundtable and performance about their traditions at UNESCO in December 2007.

Under the patronage of Prince Albert II, a symposium on ocean acidification (International Symposium on the Ocean in a High CO2 World held in Monaco from 6-9 October, 2008) was organized by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP).

An international experts’ meeting on sustainable development in the arctic region in the face of climate change will be held 3 - 6 March 2009 in Monaco.

Monaco takes part every year in celebrations of the French language organized by the group of French-speaking countries at UNESCO. The previous day’s events were centred on the United Nations 2008, Year of Languages. UNESCO’s French-speaking countries staged a show about the diversity of the French language at the Quai Branly museum in Paris in March 2008.

Monaco has always backed UNESCO’s action on bioethics.
