Colombia joined UNESCO on October 31, 1947. It is coordinated by UNESCO Quito Office, cluster office for Andean countries.

Colombia cooperates with UNESCO on a range of projects, with an emphasis on indigenous people, independent media, cultural communication, gender issues and climate change.

According to an agreement signed in September 2007, Colombia is establishing a regional centre for the management of water in urban systems in Cali, under the auspices of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP).

Cartagena de Indias hosts the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission’s regional bureau for marine science activities.

Bogotá was named World Book Capital City in 2007. The city is home to CERLALC, organization providing support to Latin-American governments on copyright and other book-related issues.

The Malpelo Flora and Fauna Sanctuary was added to the World Heritage List in 2006.
