The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has been a Member State of UNESCO since November 25, 1946.

Its capital Caracas is home to UNESCO’s International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC). The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office in Quito, Ecuador.

The 2005 Education for All Global Monitoring Report showed that the country’s schooling rates are among the region’s top ten.

At the behest of Venezuela, UNESCO in 1978 created the Simón Bolívar International Prize that rewards activities contributing significantly to peoples’ freedom and dignity. Past winners include Mohammed Yunus, founder of Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank, Cuba’s Casa de las Américas, and the Vicaría de la Solidaridad in Chile, which documents human rights violations.

Colombeia: Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda’s Archives, covering the late 18th to early 19th centuries, were added to the Memory of the World Register in 2007.
