Qatar joined UNESCO on January 27, 1972. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Doha (Qatar), cluster office for Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Qatar works closely with UNESCO to further the achievement of Education for All goals, notably through its policy of support to innovations and new information technologies in teaching methods. Qatar has reached gender parity and a pupil / teacher ratio of below 10 in primary education. In 2006, Qatar participated in UNESCO’s regional seminar on early childhood policy development held in Muscat (Oman).

Qatar joined the UNESCO Associated Schools network in 1983 and presently has 43 ASPnet schools; it is one of nine countries participating in the pilot phase of the First ASPnet Regional Flagship project on Water for the Arab Region, launched in December 2006 in Abu Dhabi.

The second Conference of National Human Rights Organizations in the Arab States was held in Doha in 2006, with the participation of UNESCO, to discuss priorities linked with the Organization’s Human Rights Strategy and research agenda.
