The Kingdom of Thailand joined UNESCO on January 1, 1949. The UNESCO Cluster Office in Bangkok covers Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.

Thailand hosted the Fourth Ordinary session of the World Commission on Ethics of Science Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) in 2005, which adopted the Bangkok Declaration. At the same time the government organized a World Youth Forum on Ethics of Science and Technology and a Regional Meeting of the Ministers of Science and Technology from Asia and the Pacific.

Among other scientific collaborations with UNESCO, Thailand participates in the Deltas in the Monsoon Asia-Pacific region (DeltaMAP) project, which seeks to improve knowledge and understanding of Asian river deltas.

In 2005, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Empowerment of Minority Children through Education and the Preservation of their Intangible Cultural Heritage.
