Paraguay has been a member of UNESCO since June 20, 1955.

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura visited Paraguay in March 2007, and attended the openings of the “Water, culture and creativity” meeting organized by IHP-LAC (International Hydrological Programme/Latin America and Caribbean) and a forum on MERCOSUR creative industries.

Paraguay is currently implementing the “Ñanduti Plan,” the National Plan of Education for All 2003-2015, which takes its name from handcrafted Paraguayan textiles.

The Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, part of the 17th century “Jesuit Route” in South America, were added to the World Heritage List in 1993.

Paraguay also participates in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves through two biosphere reserves: Bosque Mbaracyú Biosphere Reserve and El Chaco Biosphere Reserve.

Twenty cities from Paraguay joined the UNESCO Coalition of Latin American and Caribbean Cities against racism, discrimination and xenophobia, launched in 2006.
