Ireland joined UNESCO on October 3, 1961.

Ireland is one of the countries contributing to the funding of the EFA (Education for All) Global Monitoring Report. It is also involved in the QualiFLY project, which promotes family literacy.

The country participates in a number of UNESCO’s earth science projects.

Two sites in Ireland are inscribed on the World Heritage List. The first is the Archaeological Ensemble of the Bend of the Boyne, one of the largest concentrations of prehistoric megalithic art in Europe. Preservation of this site has paved the way for other joint projects between Ireland and the Organization in the fields of art and culture. The remote and therefore well-preserved 7th century monastic complex of Skellig Michael was added to the list in 1996.
