Gambia joined UNESCO on August 1, 1973. The country is covered by the Regional Office for Education in Africa (BREDA), located in Dakar, Senegal.

A distance learning project was developed in Gambia in 2003, within the framework of reinforcing teaching capabilities.

Gambia is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012).
