Guinea-Bissau joined UNESCO on November 1, 1974. The country is covered by the Organization’s Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal.

In 2005, an extra-budgetary project was implemented in Guinea-Bissau aimed at children in difficulty and at capacity-building for training of educators in functional literacy.

Guinea-Bissau is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012).
