Guinea Bissau joined UNESCO on 1 November 1974. The country is covered by the Organization’s Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal.

In 2004, Guinea Bissau launched a reform of its educational policies in support of a national 10-year programme for Education For All. UNESCO’s Regional Office for Education in Africa (BREDA) has assisted the Education Ministry’s capacity-building efforts.

Rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage, Guinea Bissau is determined to safeguard and promote this wealth. It joined the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 1996 when the Boloma Bijagós Reserve was created. The site is also on the World Heritage Tentative List. The country signed the World Heritage Convention in 2006.
