Senegal joined UNESCO on November 10, 1960. The UNESCO Office Dakar, Regional Office for Education in Africa (BREDA) was opened in 1970. Senegal is committed to achieving the goals of Education for All and currently allots 40% of its budget to education.

Senegal hosted the The World Forum on Education in 2000, an event attended by over 1,100 people from around the world.

Senegal is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012).
