The Bahamas joined UNESCO on April 23, 1981. The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office for the Caribbean in Kingston, Jamaica.

The country is determined to achieve all the goals of the Education for All (EFA) Programme.

The College of the Bahamas, located in the capital city, Nassau, is a member of the UNESCO-UNEVOC Network, a global network of technical and vocational education institutions.

The Bahamas is part of the Caribbean Coastal Productivity Programme (CARICOMP), a regional programme that contributes to integrated coastal management.

UNESCO and the Bahamas cooperate on social and cultural events such as the Youth Focus Bahamas project, aimed at encouraging young people to think about issues such as sustainable development or protecting their heritage. The International Year for the Commemoration of the Struggle Against Slavery and its Abolition saw the launching of several projects including restoration of the national museum and training of young people (Youth Path) in heritage-related entrepreneurship.

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura paid his first official visit to the Bahamas in May 2004.
