Structure of the CommissionThe National Commission consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly of the 100 members of the commission, which meets once a year;
- The Executive Committee (17 members), which meets three times a year, plus its Bureau ;
- Four Expert Committees, dealing with: (1) Education; (2) Natural and Social Sciences; (3) Culture; (4) Communication and Information. The meetings are scheduled twice a year;
- The Secretariat.
Members/CompositionThe Commission comprises 114 members, 14 of which represent the German Federal Government and the Government of the Länder. The other 100 members are elected by the General Assembly. They are either institutions involved in UNESCO's fields of competence at an international or federal level, or individual experts chosen in their personal capacity and representing the broad diversity of UNESCO's major programmes. Thus, the membership comprises professional associations, expert institutions, NGOs, political and scientific foundations, universities, the media and different religious communities.
In addition to the maximum of 100 elected members, the membership of the German Commission comprises several honorary and corresponding members who do not have the right to vote.
Half of the members are elected by the General Assembly every two years.
The Expert Committees, with a size of about 20 experts, comprise a similarly mixed membership of representatives of government, of professional associations, expert institutions and individual experts.
Executive CommitteeThe Executive Committee meets three times a year.
General AssemblyThe General Assembly of all members meets once a year. Its members (described above) hold elections, adopt the budget and programme resolutions, discuss general policy guidelines and legally discharge the Executive Committee.

Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
OverviewThe record of cooperation of the German Commission for UNESCO with other National Commissions is exceptional. The Commission makes significant intellectual and technical investments in consolidating bonds between and among National Commissions by launching joint projects or providing technical support. The National Commission cooperates with a number of European National Commissions in the organization of seminars and exchanges of experience. Against the backdrop of a partnership programme established in 2008, there is a particular strong collaboration with African National Commissions for UNESCO, including the organization of capacity-building workshops as well as bi- and multilateral projects.
