International Conference on Integration of Academic Courses with Vocational Education

An International Conference on "Integration of Academic Courses with Vocational Education in Secondary Schools" is being organized jointly by UNESCO and the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), from 17-19 February 2012 in New Delhi.

With the objective of exploring modalities for increasing access to sustainable and learner centric quality school education equipped with vocational skills through open distance learning (ODL) the partners have identified following five themes:

  • Vocational Skills and Training to empower citizens

  • Designing the Curriculum and Quality Framework

  • Use of Technology in TVET

  • Recognizing Prior Learning

  • Assessment and Certification Framework


  • It is expected that the Conference will enhance understanding on TVET policies, strategies for integrating academic courses with vocational education through equivalency and pave the way for implementing NVEQF and knowledge sharing and experiences.

    The participants will be State Secretaries of Education, Government of India, Academic and TVET institutions, educational planners, administrators, national and international experts in the area of Secondary education, TVET, Assessment and RPL experts, representatives from trade and industry, Government, non-government agencies, industry partners and UN agencies.

    Hon. Shri. Kapil Sibal , Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Government of India will inaugurate the Conference on 17 February 2012 and Hon. Mrs. D. Purandeshwari, State Minister for Education will address the valedictory session on 19 February 2012.

    UNESCO New Delhi Office and NIOS given their respective missions are jointly working based on an agreement signed between the two agencies in 2010, to attain the following objectives:

  • Design an appropriate teacher training package for untrained elementary school teachers using distance education mode.

  • Expand the use of (Literacy Initiative for Empowerment) LIFEKit as an academic support material in the NIOS Open Basic Education (OBE) programme and in the equivalency programmes offered through Saakshar Bharat.

  • Upgrade identified Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses for integration in the LIFE Kit, prepared in collaboration with NIOS and UNESCO New Delhi in 2009 and integrate the education of neo-literates with skill development ultimately contributing to national development. The courses designed for this purpose will also focus on aspects related to issues of recognition of prior learning.
