The country hosts a UNESCO Cluster Office  in Windhoek, which covers Angola, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.

It is mostly desert, comprising both the Namib Desert along the coast, and the Kalahari Desert in the east. A harsh environment and a harsh economical situation have forged a country that is developing its science and research sector steadily, with many ties to UNESCO programmes.
