An IOC Anniversary flag was hosted on RV “Argos” which implements monthly cruises in the Baltic, Kattegat and Skagerrak to monitor marine environment. The observations are being performed by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute.

Every few years national marine science associations of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) join their efforts in arranging the Nordic Marine Sciences Conference.

In 2010 it was held in Strömstad in western Sweden close to the Norwegian border. During the first day of the conference a special session was organized on the results of Nordic research in oceanography - a tribute to 50 years of cooperation with the IOC.

The Conference was attended by around 250 participants. On the occasion of the session Peter Haugan (Norwegian Delegate to IOC) hanged over the IOC medal to Ulf Lie to mark his outstanding contribution to the IOC activities in his capacity of the IOC Chair.
