Preventing cancer: science at the service of health

The theme of the 7th Scientific UNESCO –Paris Match Forum is “Prevention of cancers and their reoccurrence: the scientific basis”.

A worldwide study by the World Health Organization in 2005 showed that nearly 8 million people died of cancer, constituting 13% of the world deaths and that it is forecasted that 12 millions deaths will occur due to cancer in 2030. Seventy percent of cases occur in developing countries or countries in transition. However, it is estimated that 40% of cancers could be avoided by reducing the principal risk factors. The gravity of declared cases of cancers and the relapse rate could be reduced by nearly 30% by screening and early treatment. More and more people are surviving cancer but live in fear of a relapse.

How to avoid developing cancer? How to avoid a relapse? There is a lot of information available in print and audiovisual media on cancer but what is the real scientific value of this information? How can a cancer patient make informed decisions?

The UNESCO-Paris Match Forum aims to respond to these questions.

The UNESCO-Paris Match Scientific Forums on the advancement of scientific research were created in 2003 with the aim of giving access to the latest discoveries in the medical sciences to the general public, in an attractive and thorough way. Every year, UNESCO and Paris Match bring together around 10 eminent researchers to present to a general public audience their findings on a particular public health issue.
