The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Among Kyrgyzstan's most significant environmental issues are water pollution and soil salinity.

There are currently 2 biosphere reserves under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme (MAB), and it is involved in one project aiming to study mountain ecosystems.
