UNESCO jointly with the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the academy of sciences for the developing world (TWAS), have launched the "ICGEB-TWAS-UNESCO/IBSP Joint Project in Basic Molecular Biology". This project aims to promote research on plant and animal pathogens that affect agricultural productivity in developing regions, and to create a network of laboratories involved in this research and that could stimulate South-South and North-South co-operation thus building research capacity in scientifically lagging countries and in the developing world at large.
