UNESCO Platform on Strengthening National Research Systems
On the path to reaching the Millenium Development Goals, governments are confronted by new security threats, fierce economic competition and emerging social challenges. Continued progress requires insight, innovation and dedicated research.
UNESCO Platform on Strengthening National Research SystemsScience and research constitute the basis for development, as was reasserted in October 2007’s UNESCO Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, and includes a wide variety of scientific disciplines, such as technology, engineering, environmental sciences, health, transport, social studies, education and planning, which are relevant in and for all countries in development. Small economies may benefit from policies that aim at pooling resources through regional collaboration in science.

In this context, UNESCO aims at strengthening National Research Systems so that research and science play a greater role in social and economic development. The term “National Research System” denotes the entirety of institutions, networks, persons and resources that potentially could contribute to in-country scientific research production.

The UNESCO Platform on Strengthening National Research Systems that brings together all relevant expertise from the different Programmes of UNESCO (Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Communication and Information), provides a number of Member States with support for reviewing their national research and science systems. This Platform will also develop strategic policy recommendations to improve national development outlook on the basis of stronger research and science capacities.
