Lauren Child, British author and illustrator of children’s books, has signed a partnership with UNESCO. It has been launched officially on 25 June in London. Under the terms of the partnership, Ms Child and her publisher Hachette Children’s Books will donate the royalties from her best-selling book “That Pesky Rat” for three years to UNESCO’s Programme for the Education of Children in Need.

Author of children’s books Lauren Child and UNESCO launch partnership for children in needFor this occasion, an enhanced edition of “That Pesky Rat” will be released this month in the United Kingdom. The funds generated by book sales will finance different UNESCO-supported projects for children in need, such as the Renacimiento Foundation for street children in Mexico City (Mexico). The new edition of “That Pesky Rat” will contain stories of children in the Foundation’s care.

The partnership also encompasses “My Life is a Story”, a campaign initiated by Ms Child to collect stories of children around the world. At first these life stories, written or recorded, will come from children participating in projects affiliated with UNESCO’s Programme for the Education of Children in Need. Later, schools will be invited to take part in the project and their pupils encouraged to produce texts. The aim is to enable children from very different backgrounds to become aware of their common destiny. A selection of these life experiences will be made available on line.

Additionally, Koïchiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO, has decided to name Lauren Child a UNESCO Artist for Peace.
