Ethics of Science in Africa
For the first time since its creation, the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) will meet on the African continent on the occasion of its 5th session which will take place in Dakar, Senegal, from 6 to 9 December 2006.
His Excellency President Abdoulaye Wade will preside over this 5th session of COMEST which is being organized jointly by the Ministry of Scientific Research of Senegal and UNESCO.

Key areas to be addressed will include:
  • ethics education and consultation on the core curriculum on ethics and bioethics teaching;
  • environmental ethics and consultation on the draft policy advice on environmental ethics and the problem of toxic waste in Africa;
  • codes of conduct for scientists and regional consultation on science ethics and scientists’ responsibility, and setting up monitoring and application bodies; and
  • the connection between biodiversity, genetically modified organisms and biotechnology: African prospects.
Several Ministers of Science and Technology from West Africa will participate in this COMEST Session to discuss the incorporation of ethics of science and technology in African public policies and the Dakar Declaration on the Ethics of Science and Technology, thus opening the international debate on this matter.

In parallel, a Youth Forum on the ethical and social responsibilities of scientists in Africa will be organized, in order to encourage dialogue and reflection by young scientists, technologists, and youth in general on the ethical considerations of science and technology.

All Member States of UNESCO are invited, as observers, to attend the meetings of the Commission.
