| Creating a research institute on regional integration in West Africa |

| A third meeting of the Steering Committee of the Institute of West Africa (WAI) took place from 22 to 24 February 2010 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (France) to finalize the modalities for the creation of this international research institute dedicated to regional integration and social transformation in West Africa, scheduled for first quarter 2010, in Praia (Cape Verde). |

 Representatives of the main initiators of this project - including Pierre Sane, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Social and Human Sciences, José Brito, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cape Verde and President of the Steering Committee of the WAI, as well as representatives of the Commissions of the Economic Community of African States (ECOWAS), the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA) and Ecobank participated in this meeting which culminated in the signing of a "Headquarters Agreement" between the Cape Verdean authorities and UNESCO, placing the WAI under the auspices of UNESCO, as a category 2 centre.
On 24 February a briefing on the objectives of this institute was organized with the Group of ECOWAS Ambassadors to UNESCO (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo).
The proposed creation of the WAI meets a need that has continued to emerge at a series of national seminars held between late 2005 and early 2008 in the 15 member countries of ECOWAS, within the framework of UNESCO's Management of Social Transformations (MOST) programme: to consolidate the already existing multiple networks and work devoted to regional integration in order to help policy-makers in West African countries to make strategic policy choices promoting social, economic and cultural development based on evidence from research in the social sciences.
