Colombia peace accord offers chance to ‘close chapter of war once and for all’ – UN envoy

2 August – The head of the new United Nations political mission in Colombia today pledged the world body’s steadfast support for the full implementation of the accord reached by the Colombian Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People’s Army (FARC-EP), which seeks to bring an end the longest-running conflict in the Western Hemisphere.

Racism in US casts ‘dark shadow’ over rights to free assembly, association – UN expert

28 July – The United States is struggling to live up to its ideals in the area of racial, social and economic inequality, which is negatively affecting the exercise of the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, a United Nations human rights expert said today at the end of his first official fact-finding mission to the country.

UN experts urge Dominican Republic to protect women's rights to reproductive health

27 July – Expressing serious concern over the proposed penal code amendment that would criminalize abortions, United Nations human rights experts today urged the Dominican Republic's President and legislators to protect women's rights to sexual and reproductive health in the Caribbean country.

26 July – Two senior United Nations officials today underscored that the centrality of women to the Colombian peace process, as shown by the 'historic commitment' by the Government and Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP) at the Havana Peace Talks Table, must be reinforced in the final agreement and, more importantly, during the implementation phase.

UN forum on indigenous issues urges talks between Mexican officials, teacher union wing

20 July – The head of the United Nations forum on indigenous issues today urged Mexican officials to meet with a wing of the national union of teachers to resolve the conflict in the southern state of Oaxaca, where violent protests over education took at least six lives.

UN rights chief &#39deeply troubled' by conviction of land reform activists in Paraguay

20 July – The United Nations human rights chief today expressed concern over the recent ruling by the Court in Paraguay that convicted 11 land reform protestors, calling on the country's authorities to take urgent measures to ensure fair, independent investigations and guarantee access to justice.

Haiti: UN and partners express regret over failed deliberations on provisional governance

16 July – The United Nations and its partners in Haiti have expressed &#8220deep regret” that for the fourth time in as many weeks, the country's National Assembly was unable to deliberate on the provisional governance arrangements.
