Global Citizenship Education (GCED) seeks to provide students with the ability to face and solve global problems, and to contribute proactively to a more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, and safe world.

UNESCO’s Education Sector promotes GCED within educational systems. This entails ensuring that these principles and approaches are reflected in national educational policies as well as within curricular content, teaching methods, learning environments, and monitoring and assessment frameworks. UNESCO’s approach puts emphasis on education for peace and human rights, as well as multicultural and multilingual education where relevant and appropriate.

In a world with growing manifestations of intolerance, it is crucial that educational systems equip students with values, knowledge, and skills that instill a respect for human rights.  Inclusion of them themes such as gender equality, social justice, and diversity is also essential, as students strengthen their capacity to exercise their rights and fulfill their obligations that promote a better world and future for all.
