Bioethics.

Objectives
  • The purpose of the Chair shall be to promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation in the fields of bioethics. It will serve as a mean of facilitating collaboration between high-level internationally recognized researchers and teaching staff of the University and other institutions in Portugal, in other countries of Europe and North America, Brazil and Africa, as well as in other regions of the world.


    The main specific objectives of this Chair are to:
  • identify fundamental bioethical questions with relevance to the Portuguese culture;
  • develop research projects in main areas of current bioethical debate and with important public policy implications;
  • provide excellent education in bioethics to students and professionals;
  • promote national and international bioethical dialogue through publications, research collaboration, training programmes and institutional partnerships;
  • enhance networking of Portuguese, Brazilian and African bioethicists in order to study and understand the similarities between ethics values and principles within distinct environments and cultures; and
  • strengthen and launch ethics committees within African Portuguese speaking countries.
