| General Description |
The Bayerischer Wald Biosphere Reserve is situated in the central part of the Bavarian Forest. It is part of the Bayerischer Wald National Park bordering the Sumava Biosphere Reserve (Czech Republic) to the north-east. The Bayerischer Wald represents Germany’s second-highest uplands area with spruce and beech forests, mountain streams, raised bogs and meadows. The region is known as the largest ‘wilderness’ area of central and southern Europe. The lynx (Lynx lynx) has been successfully reintroduced here. There are no people living in the biosphere reserve itself. However, some 10 000 people live in communities contiguous to the area (2001). The main commercial sectors are tourism, agriculture and forestry, glass industry and various trades and commerce. The communities are banded together into an interest association with the aim of caring for and managing the communities’ land, recreational facilities and economic sectors. Over 500 research and monitoring projects have been carried out from 1970 to 2000 in the area of the biosphere reserve. |
