| General Description |
The landscape of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve was shaped during the ‘Weichsel’ glaciation about 10,000 years ago. In this biosphere reserve, situated to the north of Berlin, all geomorphological features of the postglacial lowlands of northern Germany can be found. In the transition area of maritime and subcontinental climate, the ‘Schorfheide’ belongs to the driest parts of Germany. The natural potential vegetation of the biosphere reserve comprises mixed beech forests, oak-beech forests, pine-oak forests, mixed oak forests and dry subcontinental grasslands. Apart from forests, many lakes, swamps and mires can be found. This region is one of the lowest populated areas within Europe and has a high unemployment rate. About 35,000 people (1992) are living in the biosphere reserve, which covers an area of about 129,000 hectares. One major source of income is tourism. The Schorfheide has been an attractive hunting resort for several centuries. A logo, created by the biosphere reserve, improves the marketing of regional products and services for both locals and tourists. |

1.Temperate deciduous forest with oak (Quercus petraea, Q. robur) and beech (Fagus sylvatica) as well as Carpinus betulus, Acer platanoides, A. pseudoplatanoides and Fraxinus excelsior; alder- (Alnus glutinosa) and birch- (Betula pubescens) forests with Carex acutiformis, Iris pseudacorus etc.; xerophilous oak forests with sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and English oak (Q. robur), Pinus sylvestris, Brachypodium pinnatum etc.; plantations of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and silver birch (Betula pendula) which include wild raspberry (Rubus idaeus); 2.agroecosystems with cereals, potatoes, tabacco etc.; 3. lakes, ponds and rivers with Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia, Nuphar lutea, etc. |
