General Description |
Djendema Biosphere Reserve is situated to the south of the Botev Peak, the highest peak (2,376 meters above sea level) of the Stara Planina (Balkan Highland). It covers a mountainous area of 4220,2 hectares with many steep slopes, deep chasms and caves. Mixed forests of beech (Fagus sylvatica), Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) are well preserved in the area. Over half of the forest is virgin and some trees are more than 200 years old. Alpine meadow and bare rock habitats are also represented in the biosphere reserve. The fauna is very diverse and includes chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), brown bear (Ursus arctos) and golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). The biosphere reserve has been little influenced by man in the past. Nowadays it is completely included in the Central Balkan National Park. The mountain slopes have never been much settled but there are a number of small towns and villages in the larger river valleys. The biosphere reserve is currently under revision. |
