	General Description		Kamtchia Biosphere Reserve is situated to the south of the city of Varna on the Black Sea and comprises the floodplain at the mouth of the Kamtchia River. It covers an area of 1072,1 hectares. The reserve was established in 1951 to protect the remnants of floodplain forests which once covered a vast area. The biosphere reserve was established in 1977. This forest is dominated by ash (Fraxinus oxyphylla) and oak (Quercus pedunculiflora) with Crataegus monogyna among the understorey plants. Along the river banks, marshes provide important habitat to a diverse flora and fauna. Mammals in the biosphere reserve include roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), pine marten (Martes martes) and fox (Vulpes vulpes). There are also many reptiles and amphibians, including European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), tessellated water snake (Natrix tessellata) and alligator lizard (Ophisaurus apodus). Birds include a small colony of little egrets (Egretta garzetta) and the rare half-collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis semitorquata). The area has been subject to cutting and drainage attempts in the past. This biosphere reserve is currently under revision.
