      Biosphere Reserve Information

Bulgaria

BOITINE

General Description   Boatin Biosphere Reserve is located in Central Stara Planina (Balkan Range) beneath the peak of Baba, comprising an area of 1597,2 hectares, between 800 and 2000 meters above sea level. It was established in 1948 to protect the vast primary beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest which is about 120-180 years old. The biosphere reserve was established in 1977. Other trees and shrubs found in this forest include hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), maple (Acer platanoides), aspen (Populus tremula), juniper (Juniperus sp.), elder (Sambucus racemosa) and hazel (Corylus avellana). In more elevated parts of the biosphere reserve (1,500 meters above sea level), spruce (Picea abies) forest can be found. The varied fauna includes the mammals brown bear (Ursus arctos), red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and wild cat (Felis silvestris).
The reserve is completely included in the Central Balkan National Park. Apart from some selective cuttings and fires in the past, the area has been little influenced by man. This biosphere reserve is currently under revision.
