Petra Siq Stability: Sustainable Monitoring Techniques for Assessing Instability of Slopes in the Siq of Petra, Jordan

An in-depth assessment of the Siq being performed to detect potential unstable areas ©UNESCO

The UNESCO Amman Office is implementing the Siq Stability Project in Petra, initiated as a response to recent challenges resulting from falling rocks in the Siq, a 1.2 km long gorge serving as the only tourist entrance to the site. The project aims to provide local authorities with the necessary resources to address the slope instability with the objective of long-term sustainable intervention. The instability risks are caused by a series of factors ranging from environmental causes to tourism and a lack of strong site management capacity. Emergency measures for tourist and monument safety are an essential part of ensuring the adequate preservation of Jordan’s most popular tourist destination.

The overarching project objectives are:

  1. Monitoring system: Produce an in-depth assessment of landslide risk in the Siq based on an engineering geology field survey and the installation of an integrated and operational monitoring system for detecting potential unstable and at risk areas;
  2. Development of guidelines: Implement sustainable landslide mitigation strategies for management, conservation and protection of the site;
  3. Comprehensive site documentation: Create a 3D model of the Siq and other selected monuments with an extensive and interactive virtual tour of the site based on panoramic photography. Develop a common GIS platform for storing, analysing and managing data;
  4. Capacity building and improvement of knowledge of local authorities: The Department of Antiquities, Petra Development and Tourism Regional Authority and Petra Archaeological Park staff will participate in and benefit from the advanced technical approach of the project, including the documentation of the site, implementation and use of the monitoring system, equipment maintenance and the design and implementation of landslide mitigation strategies.
