Round table on C4D took place in Ecuador

A round table on 24 February 2011 in Quito analysed the current state of communication for development in Ecuador and identified strategies for a better positioning of communication practices in national development policies, programmes and projects. The event took place following the recommendations of the 11th United Nations Inter-Agency Round Table on Communication for Development (Washington D.C, 2009).
The Round Table on Communication for Development in Ecuador was organized by UNESCO’s Office in Quito, in collaboration with International Center for High Studies in Communication for Latin America (CIESPAL) and with the guidance and support of a national consultative group.
Communication for development is a social process, which is based on dialogue using a broad range of tools and methods. It is also about seeking change at different levels, including listening, building trust, sharing knowledge and skills, building policies, debating and learning for sustained and meaningful change. “There is no development without the participation of beneficiaries, and there is no participation if there is no communication,” agreed the participants of the meeting.
In order to nourish the debate, three studies had been prepared, prior to the Ecuadorian Round Table, by well-known specialists: Bolivian expert Alfonso Gumucio, Rubén Bravo of the Universidad Salesiana and independent consultant Elianor Franco. These studies evaluate the state of communication for development in Ecuador and describe the various forms that communication for development takes in policies and programmes implemented by the government, civil society and the United Nations system. The studies were presented by their authors, followed by the comments of a second expert and an open debate with the participants.
Attended by some 70 participants, the Round Table has succeeded in establishing a dialogue in order to share information and experiences on communication for development with key development actors, including UN agencies, academia, government institutions, civil society, media training institutions and other relevant partners.
The conclusions and recommendations resulting from this initiative will be reported to the 12th United Nations Inter-Agency Round Table on Communication for the Development that will be organized in November 2011 in India, under the patronage of UNICEF.
