| General Description | Cuenca Alta del Río Manzanares Biosphere Reserve includes a Regional Park in midland and highland mountain areas dominated by Mediterranean forests of evergreen oak (Quercus ilex subsp. ballota), ash groves (Fraxinus angustifolia), ‘dehesas’ or forested grasslands, mainly re-afforestated pine forests (Pinus pinaster, P. pinea, P. sylvestris, P. nigra, P. uncinata), and grasslands. There are also small but widespread ’sotos‘ and riparian forests. More than 5,812 people live in the biosphere reserve. The core area is composed of an Integral Nature and Educational Nature Reserve. These areas are devoted to the protection of natural, landscape and cultural resources. The ecosystems are substantially unaltered. Farming and forestry activities are allowed only under certain conditions which guarantee the compatibility with conservation purposes. Some recreational activities such as trekking are allowed. The buffer zone or agricultural and farming area corresponds to 51% of the total area, including ecosystems partially modified by traditional land uses. Extensive stock rearing is promoted in the area. As a regenerative area, it could be considered for the promotion of traditional land uses. The transition area occupies 4% of the territory and is devoted to the protection of the ‘Monte de El Pardo’, one of the best samples of Mediterranean forests. The remaining areas are subject to urban planning. More than 200,000 tourists visit the reserve each year. | |||
