      Biosphere Reserve Information

Spain

MONFRAGÜE

General Description   This site lies in the Province of Extremadura and is characterized by sclerophyllic Mediterranean forests and “Dehesas”, that is a landscape modelled by human impacts through cattle raising and production of cork from cork oak trees. The landscape of the biosphere reserve is very representative of Mediterranean agrosylvopastoralist system, with a very rich biodiversity although it has been strongly modified. Thousands of visitors come every year to this site in order to see traditional uses of natural resources and to “preserve and rediscover” nature. Many research activities are being done in this site, particularly concerning the protection of the royal eagle (Aquila adalberti) and the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardina). Eight core areas have been identified in the biosphere reserve, corresponding to restricted use, full protection and “no-use” areas of the Monfrague National Park, established in 1979. Around 3,200 persons are living permanently in the transition area of the biosphere reserve. The site is managed by the General Direction for Environment of the Junta of Extremadura. Most research is done by the University of Seville with a focus on geology, hydrology and climatic studies. A population survey to update data, in particular regarding rural activities, is being conducted (2004).
