Legislation | The Commission was established in 1952 by a decree which was revised in 1984. The Charter of the Indonesian Commission dates back to 19 September 1967. In light of the growing cooperation with UNESCO, it was re-organized on July 11th 1977 by a decree of the Ministry of Education and Culture ( No.0257/P/1977) and the designation "Committee" was changed to "Commission" ("Komisi Nasional Indonesia untuk UNESCO).
The Commission is a governmental body which is non-structural, attached to the Ministry of Education and Culture and it is responsible for the coordination of all UNESCO activities implemented by the concerned Ministries and Institutions. |
Documentation Centre | The Documentation Centre of the Commission, which is administered by a professional documentalist, holds 1500 titles, most of which are UNESCO publications. |
Structure of the Commission | The Indonesian Commission consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly or "Plenary Commission"
- Four Programme Committees
- The Secretariat, which comprises the National Coordination for
International Education and Resource Network (iEARN), the ASPnet
Coordinator and three Sections: 1) Education; 2) Science and Technology; 3) Culture, Social Science and Communication

Members/Composition | The members of the Commission represent the Government, NGOs, and individuals in their personal capacities. |
General Assembly | Composed of 24 members, representing the relevant Ministries (National Education, Research and Technology, Culture and Tourism, Communication and Information, Culture and Tourism, Health, Ocean and Fishery, etc), national institutes, universities, NGOs and the business sector. The General Assembly meets every three months.

Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions |
Overview | The Indonesian Commission has collaborated regularly with National Commissions from Asia and the Pacific, particularly with Bangladesh, the Philippines, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, China. It maintains close working relations with the Japanese and the Korean National Commissions for UNESCO while jointly implementing projects. The Commission also cooperates with the UNESCO Field Offices in the region, notably with the Regional Office for Science and Technology in Jakarta and the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Bangkok. |
