Fourth Committee Approves Draft Resolution on Peacekeeping, Hears Report from Special Committee

Seventieth Session,
26th Meeting (PM)

The Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) today approved without a vote a draft resolution on peacekeeping, and heard the introduction of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations’ report on its 2016 session.

Introduced by Seif Alla Kandeel (Egypt) in his capacity as Rapporteur, by the terms of the text, the General Assembly would endorse the recommendations of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping and would urge Member States, the Secretariat and relevant United Nations bodies to take all necessary steps to implement them.

With a view to enhancing the capacity of the United Nations in fulfilling its responsibilities, the Assembly would decide that the Special Committee continue to review its peacekeeping operations in all their aspects.

It would also reiterate that Member States contributing to the peacekeeping operations in the future or which participated in the Special Committee for three consecutive years as observers would become members at its following session.

Prior to consideration of the draft text, Mr. Kandeel said that the Special Committee had held its substantive session from 16 February to 11 March, hearing from the Acting President of the General Assembly, Deputy Secretary-General, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations and the Under-Secretary-General for Field Support.

The Fourth Committee will meet again on Monday, 13 June, to elect its new Chair and other Bureau members for its upcoming session.
