Discussion Papers Series

 

Professor Mario Silva's career includes service as an elected official in Canada between 1994 and 2011 as well as being an author and international legal scholar. In December 2011, he was appointed by the Government of Canada to serve as the 2013 Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). The IHRA is an intergovernmental body comprised of 31 member countries with a mandate to engage the support of political and social policy leaders to encourage Holocaust education, remembrance, and research both nationally and internationally.

Professor Silva is a graduate of the University of Toronto, the University of Sorbonne in Paris and holds a Master's degree in International Law from Oxford University as well as a PhD in law from the National University of Ireland in Galway. He has been honoured by the French President with the title of Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honour and has also been awarded the Order of Merit of Portugal, the Order of Rio Branco from Brazil.  Professor Silva is the recipient of the Bridge Builder Award by the Parliament of Canada All Party Interfaith Friendship Group and the Holocaust Education Humanitarian Award of the Hamilton Jewish Federation.
