Exhibition to Open at Headquarters on 28 January as Part

of United Nations Holocaust Remembrance Activities

The exhibition “When You Listen to a Witness, You Become a Witness” will open with a formal ceremony at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 28 January, in the gallery situated in the Visitor Centre of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library (1B) at United Nations Headquarters.

Part of a week-long series of Holocaust remembrance activities at the United Nations, the exhibition showcases images and quotes from the annual marches organized in Poland since 1988 for students and Holocaust survivors to remember, learn, and transmit memories.

“When You Listen to a Witness, You Become a Witness” is presented by the March of the Living International, an educational programme that educates students about the history of the Holocaust and examines the roots of prejudice, intolerance, and hate.

The International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust is 27 January and the theme of this year’s observance is “Journeys through the Holocaust”.

Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, will welcome guests to the opening ceremony, which will include brief remarks by Ron Prosor, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations; Shmuel Rosenman, Chairman, March of the Living International; Shlomo Grofman, Vice-Chair, March of the Living International; Naomi Azrieli, Chair and CEO of the Azrieli Foundation; and Max Glauben, Holocaust survivor.  A number of other Holocaust survivors and Second World War camp liberators, including some featured in the exhibition, are expected to attend.

Holocaust remembrance activities at the United Nations are led by the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme of the Department of Public Information.  The programme, as established by General Assembly resolution 60/7, was developed to encourage Holocaust education and remembrance in order to help prevent future acts of genocide.
